Q: What is a carbon footprint?
A: A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact human
activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of
greenhouse gases (GHG) produced, measured in units of
carbon dioxide (CO2).
Greenhouse gases include water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane,
nitrous oxide, ozone and CFCs.
Q: What is sustainability? How is it
different from carbon footprint?
A: Sustainability refers to the ability of a system or process to
maintain itself indefinitely. For example, we all know that crude
oil is not a renewable resource. If appropriate alternative energy
sources are not developed prior to the depletion of oil, then
western-based economies are not sustainable. As you can see from
this example, greenhouse gas emissions are just one dimension of
sustainability.
