Household Dryers

Background:

The operation of household dryers and other major appliances accounted for over 10% of Canadian Residential green house gas emissions!

Source: Natural Resources Canada

The Alternatives:

  1. Use your dryer
  2. Hang your close outside

Analysis:

Alternative Cost CO2 Other Considerations
Dryer Most households already have a clothes dryer. Therefore the only cost consideration is the ongoing electrical operating expense. This is typically $75-$125 annually. High, annual emissions are estimated at 840 kg of air pollution and greenhouse gases for each dryer .
Outside Hanging The cost of a new umbrella style clothes hanger is approximately $70. No emissions Some towns and cities have local bylaws against outdoor clothes lines/hangers

Recommendation:

A NO BRAINER. Outside hanging of clothes wins this contest hands down!

The cost of the umbrella hanger is minimal and easily offset by the savings generated by not operating your electric dryer.

If you live in one of those town's with a bylaw against outdoor clothes lines you should vote for the counselor/mayor who will change the law!
